Where it began: Francis Xavier came ashore here on 15 August 1549.
Xavier arrived with companions including Anjirō, a Japanese convert he had met in Malacca. The present cathedral in Kagoshima and the Xavier Memorial Park mark the start of the Christian mission in Japan.
